"This work is about visual incongruities. It’s the context that gives meaning rather than the object. I was in law enforcement for thirty-eight years; thirty-five of those years I worked in Los Angeles, twenty-four of which were spent as a detective investigating violent crime and civil rights violations. After retiring from law enforcement I worked for an organization that assists the homeless in Los Angeles. I also worked for the Colorado and California Innocence Projects, organizations that provide legal and investigative assistance to inmates claiming tobe wrongfully imprisoned. My work experiences immersed me in the world I now photograph. Despite the fact that I’m drawn to situations depicting hardship, loneliness and isolation, the catalyst for taking the picture is often story, form and humor. None of the photographs are setups, composites or montages. What you see is what I shoot."
