Shannon Kolvitz was born in Jacksonville, Arkansas, in 1985, but shortly after moved to Oklahoma where he grew up. From a young age it was clear that he had a profound interest in all things photography. That interest came from his older sister having photographs pinned all over her walls. During his first college photography class he saw how passionate his professor was and discovered how influential this would be on his life and the work ethic in photography. By 2007, Shannon received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography from the University of Central Oklahoma. In 2011, Shannon received his Master of Fine Arts in photography at Louisiana State University. He is currently living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana with his wife and daughter.
"The Quiet is a series of photographs that focuses on nightly travels in South Louisiana and Oklahoma. Ever since I can remember, I have been drawn to the night, as it is a calming time of the day when life is quiet. The images recall my time growing up in Southwest Oklahoma through the depiction of dismal yet riveting structures. These photographs are based on the idea of architectural ecology― that is, the relationship of architectural structures to one another and to their surroundings. . . By stitching together complementary scenes I create an illusion that derelict structures exist together in the real world. The final results are seamless panoramic representations of scenes reminiscent of the neighboring towns and lonely streets I explored as a youth." - Shannon Kolvitz
Infinite Editions printed Shannon Kolvitz's MFA thesis artwork on fine art water color paper, spray varnished the prints, and mounted them on aluminum leaving a quarter inch reveal. This presentation allows the viewers of the work to be unaffected by the reflection of glass, and seduced by the saturation of color.
